I have a copy of Z-Term (v.0.9) that >supports 9600 and 19,200 so with a 14.4 modem I end up running at 9600. >Hardly seems worth the price. Anyone know of software (shareware >particularly) that supports 14.4? Most communications programs will work fine with a modem that transmits at 14.4 kbaud. That speed refers to the fastest modem-modem connection for raw, uncompressed data transmission. Your software sets a separate speed for the computer-modem connection that must be at least as fast as the maximum modem speed in order to achieve it. I think the 9600 and 19,200 speeds you refer to are for the computer-modem connection. Try ZTerm at 19,200 or higher and your computer will talk to a 14.4 modem faster than the modem can talk to the other modem. For example, I run Microphone LT with a 57,600 computer-modem speed with a 14.4 modem. You also need to be sure that the modem initialization has the modem connect at the highest possible speed (it negotiates with the other modem, starting fast and working down). If the disc is in the drive when you boot up, you will be unable to eject it if file sharing is on. (This is true of all removable media over 2 MB, not just CD's.) The easiest solution is to grab the file fsid.hqx at ftp.apple.com, in the directory /dts/mac/hacks. This is a small collection of network-related utilities (the file is 76k) that work only with system 7.1. The one of interest to you is a 13k program called UnmountIt, and it's quite simple. You leave it on your desktop, and when you want to eject a CD or removable cartridge or optical disk that was in when the system was booted, you simply drag it onto UnmountIt, and out it comes. My comments: - Powerful, but the manuals tend to overemphasize the "power" functions. You end up trying to use the power functions too much and get overwhelmed. There is plenty of good basic functionality there if you can steer around the complex linking capabilities that bog you down (presumably just until you are fluent). I'm sure the linking is incredibly useful for some applications, but merely superfluous for many. - Better have 20 MB of disk available (mostly nice clipart) and at least 3 MB of RAM just for it (3.5 is better). VM works, but isn't pleasant. I don't regret getting it, but I have to be sure I don't get distracted with all the linking function it offers. Nice for $40 I guess. -- . . . . . . . . If anyone is considering this printer, hopefully these will help you out. The good: These things are fast. They print a lot of pages in a hurry and the processing of complex documents seems to be pretty good. They print tabloid: No other printer from Apple does this. They work with a bajillion protocols: This thing will print from DOS, Windoze, Mac, TCP/IP, IPX etc. We use it currently only on the Mac side, but plan to use it to print from the Sun very shortly. The bad: 800 dpi output it may be, but better than the Laserwriter Pro 630 at 600 it is not. The output from this printer has been the biggest dissapointment for us. Side by side, the output from the Pro 630 buries it. As a result, we returned one of the 810's we had purchased because we couldn't give up the superior print quality of the 630. This printer is a 400 dpi printer, and although pushing the engine can improve the print somewhat, it does not compare to a *true* 600 dpi engine. This thing takes a *lot* of space. Be prepared to have a large work area for the printer, as the tabloid size trays take a lot of space. Remember, you have to be able to take the tray out of the printer... Our dealer didn't install the ethernet cards (they weren't aware they were supposed to), and of course there is no documentation as to how to do this. Pagemaker 4.01 REFUSES to print to this printer without postscript errors galore. Option printing helps, but is not foolproof. Finally, the manual feed tray is not as sophisticated as the Pro 630. You must feed one sheet at a time, and the printer cannot print on paper from the paper tray while there is paper in the manual feed tray. This is quite a problem for a workgroup printer in my opinion. If you have any questions about these printers, feel free to e-mail me at lingenjs@biola.edu. I am happy to answer any questions that I can answer from my experience with them. If I remember the S-register correctly it has the same function over what is reported when the modem connects, right? Note W0 and W1 are in the manual, W2 is not. But works just like W2 is suppose to. You can use FaxStf v2.x(.x) if you select the modem by chipset and use the Sierra (sp?) High-speed chipset. Yes, this is class 2 (as well as class 2 has been defined...). I got the High-speed rockwell chipset to work, but only for sending faxes, not receiving them. the Sierra works both ways. V3.x of FaxStf supposedly supports the Line Link as a modem selection. (Dunno for sure, don't have it.) I wanted the 500-sheet tray to be the default, so that I could put letterhead in the 250-sheet tray. I received suggestions from quite a number of people. Thanx to those listed below. If I missed someone, please forgive me: we've been having severe mail-server problems recently. The best solution seems to lie in sending PostScript commands to the printer to modify its non-volatile RAM (NVRAM). Below I've reproduced part of the information sent to me by D.Thomas@vthrc.uq.edu.au and elaborated upon by Joshua Geist from Apple Canada. D.Thomas@vthrc.uq.edu.au also sent me a copy of a lengthy suggestion he made to Apple about the whole situation, and indicated that he would prepare a summary for INFO-MAC when he has the time. I hope he can, as he makes a number of excellent points. I hope Apple takes his suggestions seriously, as the workaround described below addresses the problem, but is far from intuitive, and perhaps not even reasonable. The pro tem solution is this: Use the LaserWriter Utility to send a PosttScript text file (created with a word processor (text oly format) or TeachText) to the printer, containing the following text: serverdict begin 0 statusdict begin 2 setdefaultpapertray end The second digit (2) defines the default tray. Alternatives are: 0 250 sheet cassette 1 multi-purpose tray 2 500 sheet cassette 3 envelope tray >>>THEN, turn Tray switching OFF under Paper Handling in LaserWriter Utility. (Failure to do this will cause docs to be printed on letterhead if the 500-sheet default tray runs out of paper!) Users will have to be told that although their print drivers still show Auto Select as the default setting, the 500-sheet cassette will, in fact, act as the default. The workshops are progressive and focused on original composition. The program provides continuity with minimal overlap or repetition in the two weeks. Former students have benefited most by attending both weeks. If you enroll for only one week it must be the first week. In the second workshop we build on the skills you acquire in the first. The workshops are Macintosh based and the topics we cover include: sequencing (Vision, MusicShop, Performer) music printing (Finale) synthesizer programming (Galaxy) sampling (Sound Designer, Alchemy, TurboSynth) alternate MIDI controllers algorithmic composition (M, MAX) If you want a more detailed description via email, send a message to: fnelson@ocvaxa.cc.oberlin.edu If you want a brochure and registration forms, include your snail mail address or write directly to the address below. They have uploaded the archive file to AOL and Compuserve, but at present do not have the ability to do so on the Internet (at some point in the future they will, according to my source). This is for Laserwriter use in one of our student labs and we are hoping that this will cut down on students using the laser printer as a photocopier. (We realize they can issue the print command numerous times to get multiple copies.) Does anyone have any experience with changing this? Was it in a lab and did it seem to help? I figure there must be a way to use ResEdit to do this but I am not sure which resource to edit. I know that I can modify the default number of copies by modifying resource -8191 of DITL but am not sure how to LOCK this number. Thanks! The AppleCD Audio Player causes a continuous flow of keyUp events; the events are directed to the frontmost application, which supposedly gets a lower rate of null events. The AppleCD Audio Player does this because it fiddles with the SysEvtMask low memory global variable. (Wasn't Apple telling us not to use low mem global variables?) Needleman Subject: PU/DD upgrades available I remember reading in TidBITS #212 about the upgrade of Symantec's Disk Doubler (formerly Fifth Generation's Disk Doubler and formerly Salient's Disk Doubler) to version 4.0 ($39.99). But I don't recall seeing a mention that Symantec also has a new version of Fifth Generation's Public Utilities (version 2.0) out now. It is shipping, priced for registered users at $29.99 plus $8.00 shipping/handling plus sales tax if any. You can order anytime from 800-441-7234. I'm just a happy user of both products, and this note is written only to add some information, namely: 1) If you order an "upgrade" you'll get it, regardless of whether or not you are a registered user or actually have the program at all. Apparently Symantec doesn't have Fifth Generation's records merged into its order system as yet. I placed my order a few moments ago with no questions asked about previous versions or serial numbers. I'm not debating the ethics of ordering this way if you're not a current user of the products; seems to me it's up to the company selling the stuff to verify that you are a current legitimate user and, if it doesn't want to bother to do that, you do nothing wrong to take advantage of its laziness. But I AM a legitimate registered user of both products, so my own conscience is clear! Do with ths information what you will. 2) SuperLaserSpool has been discontinued. Apparently it's NOT being updated to work properly with the new 8.1.1 Laserwriter driver. I'll miss it! (C) Folks, I've been reading with interest the tweaking being done on RamDoubler, making it into "RamTripler". grin. I love utilities like these, in which hidden nuggets can be found. I am continually amazed at this product. I returned my RamDoubler back to its original 'doubler' status (from the tripler) since I honestly have no need for 25 meg of ram (at least this year! Somebody quote me in about ten years when we are all running 5 gigabyte ram machines!). However, I have not seen much of a performance hit whether I'm using the "tripler" mode or "doubler" mode. At any rate, this is really a remarkable product. After the body of this message is a capture of my 'About This Macintosh" window, as per the F-Key, Text Capture. I loaded my LC475 up with a lot of ram sapping applications. I then loaded in the 1984 Mac movie (no, I can't send it to you! Too big!). My copy of the movie has always been jerky. I just knew that with all the junk I put in this machine for my test, that the movie would truly choke. Well, it didn't! The movie ran smoothly. RamDoubler did not penalize the movie's playback speed at all. I am MOST impressed. I then fooled around with text scrolls. Ah, a performance hit. I'd say that my text scrolling is equivalent to that of a Centris 610. At one time, my 475 was much faster in scrolls. Golly... (Perhaps someone could write a soft QuickDraw accelerator for the Mac similar to the products available for the ATari ST???) But, other than that.... Amazing product. BUY it, folks! I remember that it involved downloading a postscript-form file to the printer, but I'm afraid I don't have it anymore. You can find it in the Info-Mac archives, I'm sure.
